With the release of her 11th studio album, Time posed the question: “Why Taylor Swift’s Music Makes Us So Emotional.”

TCU psychology professor Naomi Ekas had an answer.

“We all experience loss,” Ekas said. “We all experience friends that hurt us, and we want to get back at them and get revenge on them. We all fall in love, we all fall out of love.”

She told the publication that Swift’s themes are universal and knowing that the artist feels what we feel tends to validate our emotions.

Time spotlighted the popularity of the course Ekas taught, Psychology (Taylor’s Version), which discussed things like infidelity, revenge, attraction and breakups.

“We take different topics and themes from her music or her life and apply a developmental perspective to it,” Ekas said.
